Equity of opportunities.

While the merits of redistribution of wealth are debatable, it is hard to argue against equitable access to opportunities to contribute value to the economy and our communities. Technology, innovation and radical openness will move us from a market that rewards value appropriation to one that rewards value creation.

The capitalist mantra of value appropriation as enshrined in the stated goal of 'shareholder wealth maximization', is after all a theory of what works. It is quite possible that another world is possible in which a focus on value creation as opposed to value appropriation gets rewarded by the markets. Through my research I intend to highlight the role technology can play in moving us closer to this alternative paradigm. Through my engagements with companies and institutions, I intend to amplify the value creation potential of individuals and organizations.

Phrases such as "The poor must be so because they are stupid", underlie a commonly held assumption that non-contributing members of society are in that position because they are lazy. Another commonly held assumption is that opportunities are equally available to all of us. However, we do have our fair share of phrases that counter such notions: "old boys club" and "born with a silver spoon". With every generation in which a large section of the human race is kept at bay, we as 'spaceship earth' fail to harness the most precious natural resource available to us - "human potential". My research focuses on solutions that technology affords to counter this challenge.  I believe that the dawn of technologies such as cognitive computing provide the human race with tools to provide a second chance to those who did not have the benefit of a good start.

The second main area of my research interest is in the role of technology in helping organizations(firms and Government) amplify their value creation potential. Value creation as opposed to value appropriation. I believe that technology will drive enough transparency that value will eventually accrue to the contributors. In politics, we've see technology driven transparency and citizen activism throw over Governments which arguably were the epitome of value appropriators. I contend that technology driven transparency and consumer activism will drive a similar shift in the corporate world from value appropriation to value creation. The quiet transformation in the diet of some fast food chains is probably the canary in the coal mines. My research does not focus on consumer activism but on the firms that sense these weak signals and want to leverage technology to amplify their value creation side.

Two broad areas in which my research is currently focused are (1) Role of cognitive computing applications, such as advanced analytics, in amplifying the value creation potential of individuals and institutions (firms, Governments and non-profits). (2) Radical openness in the innovation and execution ole of open innovation in adical openness as a means to democratize opportunities for value creation as well as for harnessing the Open innovation and crowd movement as a means to democratize opportunities for value creation as well as harness the latent cognitive surplus of the human race. To preview some of my research in these areas, click here.

In practical applications of my research I look forward to engaging with companies that are interested in amplifying their value creation potential by leveraging these latest technological developments.
